About Ooty history, it has been a hill area originally occupied by tribal inhabitants, particularly one major section of tribes called Thodas, who used to worship a single stone, thereby the single stone in Tamil language called ‘otha kal’ conjoined with the word ‘mund’ to mean tribal settlement, made the name of the place ‘othakamand’, thereafter Udhakamand, and when Britishers acquired this region from Tipu Sultan who had by that time entered this place for a hide-out, later occupied the location, transferred it to Britishraj under Srirangapatnam treaty in 1799 when Britishers named it Ooty as a shorter form.
