Off the beaten track hotels-Varikatt Heritage

Varikatt Heritage Thiruvananthapuram

A traditional Kerala house built by a British woman, cared for by a long line of lawyers. Sounds intriguing? Come to Varikatt Heritage. The stiff upper lip attitude has long been gone but you can still indulge in ‘chhota’ pegs of Scotch at sunsets. Relive the Raj-era with Varikatt’s colonial character and Indo Saracenic architecture of this homestay. Surrounding it is a dense garden with quaint swings for children and hammocks promising languid evenings. Earthy colours run riot with terracotta pots, green plants and antique, hand cardved rosewood furniture. Charming.

USP: British Raj meets traditional Kerala with a dose of history.
The Varikatt villa is a short taxi ride from both the International Airport and the Thiruvananthapuram Railway Station. The villa will arrange for your transportation on prior notice. Centrally located, it is adjacent to the Government Secretariat on MG Road (Mahatma Gandhi Road). As you face the Secretariat, on the left there is a road leading to a confluence of three roads, the Press Road, Punnen Road, and Cantonment Road. The Varikatt villa is located at this very junction, on Punnen Road. It has a brown boundary wall and an ornamental brown gate with ‘Varikatt’ written on it.

Air: Thiruvananthapuram is well connected by air with major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kochi. International flights too operate from here.

Rail: Thiruvananthapuram is a major railway station in India. All key destinations in Kerala and rest of South India are linked to Thiruvananthapuram.

Road: An extensive road network connects Thiruvananthapuram with most of the cities in Kerala such as Kochi, Alleppey and Kumarakom. You can also approach the city from other South Indian cities like Chennai and Bangalore.

What is Kerala without an Ayurvedic spa? The resort doesn’t leave you disappointed and also throws a badminton court, library and board games in the kitty. Varikatt especially makes sure your children are entertained offering activities, children’s books, swings and board games. You also get to enjoy authentic Kerala delicacies even though the kitchen is happy to rustle up any special request, any cuisine! While you’re here do visit the many fascinating temples and museums nearby or go for a Kathakali performance. The Varikatt villa organises excursions to the local beach at Veli Tourist Village, Kovalam, and further to exotic Varkala, as well as to the picturesque backwaters where you can cruising on houseboats.
