The Verandah in the Forest, Matheran
Offbeat hotels-Exotica Beach Resort - Verandah in the forest matheran

The quintessential ‘non-hotel’ hotel, its large verandah sprawls in the thick forest, running around the charming, Victorian bungalow. Everything has been lovingly restored, and the bungalow retains its quaint colonial ambience with antiques and stained glass windows. Raised like a dream in the Sahyadri ranges, the bungalow offers tranquillity like nowhere else.

Relax with a book under the old-fashioned, high ceilings, the service always at your call but never intrusive. 19th century is reawakened at the bungalow, coexisting unobtrusively with all modern comforts.

USP: Weekend break for the soul.
The hotel offers pick up service from Mumbai. Please note that Matheran is the only ‘pedestrian’ hill station in India, which means that cars are not allowed to enter Matheran and cars are parked in a 24-hour parking lot. The distance between Dasturi and the hotel is about 45 minutes on foot. You can also take a horse ride or cart ride.

Air: Nearest airport is Mumbai (120 km).

Rail: You can access Matheran from Mumbai, via Neral on the Mumbai-Pune railway line. The junction closest to Matheran is Neral. A 21 km long, 2 hour scenic and enjoyable ride, and you can get to Neral from Mumbai's Central Station or from Pune. This route may be closed down or at least reduced to a once daily during the monsoon but in season, reservations can be made at Mumbai or Pune, in advance.

From Matheran, you can book only 45 minutes before the train departs. The quaint toy train travels thrice a day between Neral and Matheran. Some express trains bound for Pune stop at Karjat, a couple of stops ahead. One could back track to Neral by a local train to Bombay. From Pune, catch any train to Bombay which stops at either Karjat or Neral.

Road: Matheran is a 1.30 – 2 hour long drive from Mumbai. Take the Express Way to Pune and take the first left turn to Khopoli Shadung Road. Pass the double road to Chowk Naka Cross Road and take the left turn at Chowk Naka. Proceed and then take a left turn at Karjat and the next left turn at Neral. This road will lead you to Dasturi, where the parking lot is.

Peace, quiet, tranquility. The warm hospitality will win you over. Stroll down to the nearby Charlotte Lake, relish the local cuisine, go for long walks to Matheran’s many ‘view points’. If adventure is your style, go trekking. The Verandah is the ideal place to rejuvenate and refresh yourself.
