The service was good. The staff was friendly however they could be more proactive and pay attention to detail. All was provided when asked for. The breakfast however was quite appalling and insufficient by any standards.

The rooms are clean and well kept. A bit small for two people. Desk service is poor, not very cooperative. ItÂs a very no frills place, but worth it for the price and location.

They do not have the meal facility,it is ordered to some nearby restaurant and it takes nearly an hour to get the meals in the room. Apart from that, the service though slow is okay. Location of the hotel is a big advantage.

My decision to book three rooms in Marble Palace Guest House can be said to be one of the many decisions that I would not like to repeat in life.
I had booked three rooms with provision for one extra bed in one of the rooms from 25th of March to 28th of March 2011. The check in/ check out time in this guest house was 12:00 noon. On enquiring about the booking, I was informed over phone that all the three rooms were on the ground floor.
Transport to and from the hotel:- I made a request oven phone to arrange for a pick up vehicle, on chargeable basis, from Howrah Station but the same was flatly refused. The return journey too could not be arranged by the hotel, neither on free basis nor on chargeable basis ÃÂ they however facilitated in the booking of taxis.
Facility for local sight seeing transport:-Request for local transport was arranged by the guest house, but the rates were quite high. Innova vehicle was arranged for Rs.175.00 per hour subject to a minimum booking of 10 hours, Tata Indica went @ Rs.135.00 (AC) per hour subject to a minimum of 8 hours and a Tata Sumo (AC) was arranged at Rs.125/- per hour subject to a minimum of 8 hours
Rooms:-After reaching the hotel through own arrangement, I was asked to move over to another building which was located about two lanes away from the main hotel. This building No. 57A was their second guest house. It is not known whether there was really no room in the original guest house or not. On reaching the second building, I was surprised to find that the lodging facilities started only from the 1st floor. I was allotted two rooms in the first floor and another in the second floor. This was despite the verbal communication over phone about all my rooms being booked on the ground floor. My problem was that I was accompanied by my family members who two of whom were senior citizens and another two were very senior citizens and climbing stairs was difficult for them. However, as I had already made the payments at the time of booking through make my trip, I had no choice.
Room conditions:-The general get up of the rooms was good and the ACs were working fine. The toilets were okay and there was sufficient running water in the taps. However, the bed sheets were not changed by the hotel staff and towels were changed on the second day only after specific request. Two shampoo sachets and one small soap cake were provided for each double bed room on the first day but not thereafter.
Beverages:-Being Tamils, our first choice for beverage was coffee but this the caretakers there could not arrange. However, tea was served @Rs.10 per cup. .
Complimentary Tea & Breakfast:-The bed tea was scheduled for 7:00 am (I wonder whether this was not too late) and the breakfast at 7:30-8:00 However, on 26th I had to go out for my sight seeing trip at 7:00 in the morning and despite our request neither tea nor breakfast was provided. This despite the fact the breakfast on that day was bread, butter and banana and though these were ready, the hotel staff thought it prudent not to serve the same before their official time.
Lunch:-There was no scope for preparation of lunch at the guest house. If required, lunch could be booked from outside agencies (through the guest house) and could be served in the rooms. However, the only major problem was that we were 7 persons in all and had booked three rooms and this lunch could be arranged only in the three separate rooms i.e there is no room in the hotel where all seven of us could sit and have our lunch together. Hence, we opted to go out to outside hotels for lunch.
Newspapers:-Though I was not provided any news paper on any day, I later gathered that one common newspaper was there for all the persons in all the rooms to share. I wonder how costly the newspapers in Kolkata must be that forced the hotel management to such austere measures.
Overall impression:-The behaviour of the two watchmen was quite pleasing but that of the other staffs left much room for improvement. I have a faint belief that had we been put up in the main hotel instead of the second building, our stay would have been more pleasant and memorable; but I would not dare to risk trying this out by staying there again. I had expressed my displeasure to the hotel manager in the main hotel at the time of clearing the payments for my sight seeing vehicle and he expressed his anguish but whether he would take steps to ensure that better services are provided next time onwards is a million dollar question.
