About Haridwar history, this place was under the control of Maurya Empire during 322-185 BCE, Kushan empire from first to third century, during 6th and 7th centuries under King Harshavardhan, in the fourteenth century invaded by Timur Lang, the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak had visited this place and had holy dip at Kushwan Ghat, Moghul emperor Akbar had tasted the Ganges water here, also he immersed the sacred ashes of Raja Mansingh of Amber, also wishing that his own ashes after his death should be immersed in Brahma Kund here. Bimgoda dam in Haridwar was built in 1840, while until 18th century the river Ganga had good flow to facilitate commercial shipping activity by East India Company, the upper Ganges canal opened in 1854, Haridwar Union Municipality constituted in 1868, Haridwar becoming a region for education in Ayurvedic medicines, IIT Roorkie, industrial activity through BHEL establishing their activities there during 20th century, it is still the sacred place of religious pilgrimage for millions of Hindus every day.
