About Guruvayoor history, although legendary information gives a clue that the deity worshipped at Guruvayoor is 5000 years old, recorded history is available from 14th century only, again in the 16th century, 50 years after Narayaneeyam verses praising Guruvayur Lord was written, references are made in Tamil literature, while Guruvayur temple finds a place in 17th century songs of the Tamil saints Azhwars, while the present shrine is said to have been constructed in 1638 AD, Dutch raiding Guruvayur in 1716 looting the treasures of the temple, also setting fire to the Western tower of the temple, their 1755 war with Zamorins of Calicut destroying Trkkanavay temple, later Hyder Ali first demanding 10000 fanams to leave the temple alone, afterwards changing his mind, Guruvayur temple having been saved, while In 1789, when Tipu Sultan marched to Malabar, Ullanad Panikkars rescued and took care of the temple until 1900, Calicut becaming the trustee of the temple for the second time in 1928, the temple’s popularity is growing day by day till date.
