Bijapur Overview
One of the most wondrous and monumental places in India, Bijapur has more than a fair share of architectural wonders. It was the one-time capital of the Adil Shahi dynasty, and is completely filled with palaces, tombs, mosques, mausoleums and gateways. The single most fascinating and hard to miss feature of Bijapur is the Gol Gumbaz, the last resting place of Muhammad Adil Shah, and the 2nd largest dome in the world, second in size only to St. Peters Basilica. It is 124 feet in diameter, and is truly an architectural wonder as it stands unsupported by pillars. Also of great interest are: Bara Kaman (12 arches); Ibrahim Roza, which is said to have inspired the Taj Mahal; Jod Gumbaz; and Jumma Masjid, which is the largest mosque in the region and houses a Quran written in gold. Try to also visit the historical Navaraspur auditorium, 10 km from Bijapur. Here is also where the legendary handmade Illkal sarees are available.
