Allahabad Overview

One of the 4 sites of the Kumbh Mela, Allahabad is one of the holiest cities in India, and is located in Uttar Pradesh. Named Allahabad by Emperor Akbar, the ancient Sanskrit name of the city is Prayaga, which means “place of sacrifice”. It is so named because this is where Brahma is said to have offered his first sacrifice after creating the world. It is here also that there is a confluence of the holy rivers of Ganga, Yamuna, and the ‘invisible’ river Sarasvati. A paradise for historians and anthropologists, Allahabad is also one of the cleanest cities in Uttar Pradesh.There are innumerable holy sites at Allahabad, and temples are everywhere, making the city a haven for the devout. The historically rich Allahabad Fort is a must visit, as is the Tallest Hanuman Mandir. There are also many beautiful parks and gardens in the city, including the Khusro Bagh, Minto Park, and Company Bagh. Also visit the Allahabad Museum for a wide range of historical artifacts, as well as LokNath, where you find some of the most delicious savouries in North India.
