Ajmer Overview
An oasis in the desert of Rajasthan, Ajmer is surrounded by the green Aravalli Hills. It is an alluring city, and its many architectural and natural wonders draw thousands of visitors every year. Though Ajmer is also considered the stepping stone to the quaint and picturesque Pushkar, it is also an extremely important site of pilgrimage, to both Hindus and Muslims. Apart from visiting Pushkar, 11 km away, there are many, many other opportunities to explore heritage and beauty in Ajmer itself. The oldest hill fort in India is here: the impressive Taragarh Fort. Also visit the immensely revered Dargah Shareef of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, with its marble edifices and beautiful mosque. Also try to visit Magazine, a museum that was once the residence of Prince Salim (Jehangir), son of Akbar. The Dargah bazaar is another vibrant and historical place of interest, as is the Anasagar Lake, with its pavilions and gardens.
