Pondicherry City Attractions
The Botanical Gardens in Pondicherry was opened in 1826, and is located at the southern entrance of city bus stand. It sprawls over a 22 acre area, and has a rich variety of flora, as well as a childrens train, fountains, and an aquarium.
Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
The massive church is constructed in Gothic style, and is a much revered religious destination. It has wonderful stained glass windows that depict the life of Jesus, and is one of the most attractive churches in the city. It is located on South Boulevard
The museum displays the artefacts of Arikamedu, an ancient Roman trade centre dates back to 2nd century B.C. Roman, Chola, Pallava, French, Greek and Chinese artefacts can be found here. There are also amazing natural history exhibits to be found here.
Manakula Vinayagar Temple
This temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesh, and is located on Rue de Orleans, behind the Raj Niwas in Pondicherry Town. The temple is said to be constructed 5 centuries ago. The temple is popular with devotees seeking divine blessings for new undertakings.
This clean 1500 m long beach is 9 km from the town centre, and is an ideal place for swimming. There are two monuments, the 4 m tall statue of Mahatma Gandhi, and the French War Memorial. There is also a 29 m tall lighthouse that is over 150 years old.
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry was built in 1926, and is a world famous centre for spiritual learning. The Bureau Central office, is also an exhibition hall, and provides an introduction to the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother.
Chunnambar Boat House
Chunnambar Boat House is located on the backwaters 8 km from Pondicherry in Ariyankuppam, on the Cuddalore Main Road. The boat house provides many types of boating facilities all 7 days a week, including kayaking, motor boats, row boats, and paddle boats
Ousteri Lake is a 100 year old artificial lake that is located 15 km from Pondicherry Town, along the Pondicherry - Viluppuram Road. A wide range of aquatic species is found here, and the lake also serves as a bird sanctuary.
Panchavatti Lord Hanuman temple is located on the highway connecting Pondicherry and Tindivanam. It is a large temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman, and is a place of much interest to both the devout and curious.
Auroville is located 10 km from Pondicherry. It was conceived as a Universal Town, where people from different nationalities, faiths and beliefs live in a harmonious community. The construction of Auroville was started in 1968, and is still in progress.
