The Corbett National Park is the first forest reserve recognized by the Government of India. It is located in the Nainital, Pauri and Bijnore districts of Uttaranchal. Corbett covers an area of 1318.54 sq. kms including 520 sq. kms of core area and 797.72 sq. kms of buffer area.
It is barricaded in the north by the Kanda Range and the Ramganga River flows through it from east to west. Originally named the Ramganga National Park in 194, in 1956 Corbett was renamed to Jim Corbett National Park in memory of Jim Corbett, the famous hunter. Project Tiger, India's ambitious conservation program to save the tiger and its habitat was launched from Corbett in 1973. Corbett is home to tigers, leopards, black bears, elephants and other species of wildlife. No Corbett tour is complete without a wildlife safari in to the National Park. You can opt for a safari by jeep or on elephant back. Corbett tour packages also offer other excursions to the nearby Garjia Devi Temple and the Corbett Museum at Kaladhungi, approximately 30 kms from Corbett. Aside from the National Park and some sightseeing, a Corbett tour is all about relaxing amidst the lap of nature alongside the banks of the picturesque Kosi River.
