"Beautiful hotel! ItÃâs a British era structure, complete with wooden floor, high ceiling and gabled roof. The sound of your footsteps on the wooden staircase resounds through the hotelÃâs central hall that houses the restaurant and the TV lounge. The room was carpeted even though it had a wooden flooring. Very comfortable room and large washroom. DidnÃât like the dining hall much though the food was great! Oh n this is a great learning place...has lots of old pictures of British era Nainital. For anyone interested in a lesson in history, the senior staff members at the hotel are willing to enlighten you.
Besides this, the hotel has a great location, offering an unobstructed view of the Naini Lake from its position atop the higher reaches of Mallital. The sprawling lawn in front of the hotel is ideal to enjoy morning/evening tea. Oh n it has a huge parking lot so you donÃât need to park on the road! All in all, itÃâs a convenient and comfortable place."

Hotel: The Pavillion
City: Nainital
Star Category:
Ever heard of the adage old is gold? About 50 years old, The New Pavillion is probably one of the oldest hotels in Nainital. Located in one of the higher roads of Nainital, this hotel has a very strong appeal of the British Era, which is still resplendent in its walls, roof, balcony and in the corridors. Built in wood originally, it has undergone many stages of renovation, but has successfully managed to retain its old fervour. The wooden floors, the design of the bed, wardrobe and the doors and windows is reminiscent of the hotel's age old lineage of service.

Room Amenities
A conglomeration of New Wing and Old Wing today, The New Pavillion houses a total of 36 rooms divided into Deluxe rooms (5), Standard Rooms (16), Standard Family Suite (4) and Deluxe Family Suite (7) Set in an old fashion, the Deluxe family Suite is a combination of two bedrooms in succession, the first room complete with 2 sofa chairs and a centre table, phone, cabinet and full length mirror. The second bedroom has a satellite television, study desk in addition to the other facilities. There are two bathrooms, located at the far end of the second bedroom. Both the bathrooms have shower cubicles with amenities like soap, toilet paper and towels. The Standard family Suite is the same as above in terms of structure, services and facilities, except the fact that the second bedroom has an additional sofa set and a unique fireplace.

The restaurant is as quaint as the rest of the hotel with beautiful stained glass painting complementing an artwork of stained glass covering one of the walls. Stayed at The Pavilion, Nainital for 3 nights from June 12, 2010 till June 14, 2010, group included four couples and four kids. Our experience at this hotel was kind of mixed. Lets start with good things first. 1) Location is very good, just next to the High Court - if you are coming from Kaladhungi side, you can easily drive up the hotel without being caught up in any traffic. People looking to be away from crowds and still be in walking distance of Mall Road will like it. Those looking for Naini Lake view or "right on the Mall" option should avoid it. 2) Mall Road/Naini Lake is 10 minutes walk downhill. You can enjoy shopping at candle shops on the way. But walking back uphill to hotel will be tiring, so recommend to take a taxi that costs between Rs. 60 to 100. 3) Hotel has nice little play area for kids and a garden. We had 4 kids in our group and they thoroughly enjoyed the open space they had for themselves. 4) We stayed in "Garden Facing Heritage Suites" - these rooms were spacious with separate sitting area, verandah overlooking the garden had sitting area for each room as well. So you could enjoy your cup of tea while kids played in the garden. 5) Hotel staff was generally polite and helpful. 6) Hotel restaurant served nice food, we did not opt for meal plan and had ala-carte dinner once. Masala tea was not good. Now for the sore points: 1) Rooms were not aesthetically done, in fact they were not done at all. Very basic furniture - we booked four rooms and all had different kind of beds - One room had a bed with pillars at each corner and one the pillar blocking view to TV, it would have made sense if there was a bed canopy or something but they were just naked ugly pillars. Another room had two large cots put together to form a double bed with standard size mattresses on them leaving around 9" uncovered bed on both sides! 2) Sofa, center table and chairs in seating area were all different. Sofa had all sorts of stains. Entire furniture gave a look and feel that it had been accumulated over the years from different junk yard sales. 3) Washrooms were clean, but not well stocked. They provide only mini soaps and two towels. Flush in two of the washrooms were non-functional on day one (they were repaired on complaint), washroom door in one room would not lock. One room had a bathtub and others did not. Though hot water supply was good. 4) TV in each of the four rooms had bad reception and were hardly of any use. 5) There is no ceiling fan and we did not need any as it rained on two of the three nights we stayed there. I am not sure if you could get away without one on a hotter night. 6) We requested for a camp fire to be arranged for our group, but hotel manager refused. To conclude we felt though hotel had nice look and feel to it, good location but rooms were not well kept. It was certainly not the quality you would expect after paying Rs 3750 per night! Certainly not the value for money. Would recommend to people looking for spacious hotel in nice location away from crowds and not particular about in room luxury.

"The location is excellent. The river view and access adds great value. Good plantation and lawn in the huge open space. The swimming pool and Table Tennis hall are also well equipped and maintained. The service is really good. Rooms are too spacious. Washroom design, especially ventilation needs to be improved. Food is too costly. Overall experience is worth re-visiting, recommending."

"It was the first hotel inside the Park - almost 30 kms away from the other hotels. This is bad if you plan to party but if you are in for the real jungle experience - there is no other comparable alternative. The duplex rooms ideal for families are faboulous and try to get the Kingfisher Suites. You will hear the river stream sound at all times - even though you are perched quite up in the hill. The food and the service staff is excellent and really take good care. However there is no bar and no cigarettes available. Absence of a bar is a big setback as winter months - season time is the the best time to relax with a drink. Don't miss out the elephant mini safari and by the way, chance of spotting tigers are highest in May/June. The safari itself was long drawn as prebooking for entry was not made - so ensure they make a booking beforehand through the closest gate - the farthest gate we used was 2 hour drive away."

"Pleasantly surprised by the hotel when we got there. The website didn't quite do it justice. Great location. Just by the Kosi River. Ideal location for trekking and absorbing the outdoors. Rooms were a lot nicer than expected for the price. Great value for money. Would highly recommend as a great 3 star category."

"All in all, a great location and lots of things to do. The mattress was damaged, the washroom was sub-par, the TV wasn't working and the air-conditioner would never start without the maintenance engineer coming around. But the attitude of the staff and their intent to serve was terrific. That, combined with the view from the hotel minimized the inconvenience."

"The hotel phone was not working, so could not get information on how to reach the hotel which was quite far from town. The hotel also refused to accept credit card, the phone line was down, and the linen was not washed properly as there were stains on it. The AC and water supply were constantly going off. But the food was amazing, the views from the resort were breathtaking, the staffs were quite helpful, and at the end of stay felt sad on leaving the place."

"It was a nice and comfortable abode with all required facilities, well equipped with fire place and room heating. The food was also good. The hotel should work upon elephant safari services which were not at par with the price taken. it should cover the Corbett park also and the price should be reasonable ."

"The Ashoka Tiger Trail consists of a series of very nice cottages. Mine included a porch, sitting room, bedroom and very large and modern bathroom. It was lovely and very comfortable. This is obviously a fairly new resort, and they are in the process of constructing a pool which I'm sure will be lovely when finished. The standard of meals at Ashoka was excellent - some of the best food that I've had over my month in India. The staff were very friendly and attentive, checking regularly if I needed anything. During my stay, I went on a nature walk directly from the resort into the jungle, and saw deer, elephant and monkeys. The resort also provided a jeep safari at dawn, where I saw a tiger - which was more than I was expecting, and they also booked my elephant safari. I was very happy with the standard of accomodation, food and service at Ashoka and would recommend it to others."

Nainital
Nainital, a little Himalayan hamlet forced to grow into a city, is today one of the most famous hill-stations in India. Its famous Naini Tal, a shimmering lake enveloped by green hills on three sides, gives it an alpine feel, and has the famous Mall (a delightful promenade) curving around its banks. Naini Lake is a peaceful lake with a flotilla of pedal and rowboats whipping up waves. Nainital, renowned for superb views of the Greater Himalayas and its numerous prestigious educational institutions, was completely destroyed in the Landslip of 1880, and later rebuilt. Set into two parts with the lake separating them, with Tallital on the southern side of the lake, and Mallital on the northern upper reaches. Nainital offers the best of both worlds, the throb of city life and the calm of a quiet hill resort.
